The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of flexibility in prediction of symptoms of behavioral disorders in educable mentally retarded children in primary school mediated with parenting styles. This study is descriptive correlational research. In this research, 158 mentally retarded students in primary school were selected from two Special Schools in Tabriz using purposeful sampling method. Then, Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach) and Parenting Styles(Baumrind,) were completed by parents, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (Berg and Grant ) was done by the subjects using a computer. After discarding 8 illegible questionnaires, the collected data of 150 subjects has been analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares approach. Results of the study showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between flexibility with symptoms of behavioral disorders (P=0.001) and also between the authoritative parenting style and the symptoms of behavioral disorders (P=0.006). Moreover, most parents had an authoritative parenting style (79%). In addition, the results of Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach revealed that flexibility and authoritative parenting style were able to predict the symptoms of behavioral disorders (P=0/001). The results of this study indicate the role of flexibility and authoritative parenting style in the symptoms of behavioral disorders of educable mentally retarded children . Therefore, it is suggested that new therapeutic interventions be designed to rehabilitate flexibility of educable mentally retarded children, and also educational sessions be held for training the parents of educable mentally retarded children about parenting styles

This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of group sessions in improving the quality of life and family relationships in children with mental disability. The research procedure is experimental with pre-test and post-test design and control group. The statistical population in this study includes all families of mentally retarded boy and girl students studying in the exceptional schools in Ardabil. The studysampleis30 families selected via the convenient sampling method and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. For data gathering, the subjects are asked to complete the Quality of Life Questionnaire and Schaefer Family Assessment Device. The multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is used to test the hypothesis. The results show that the group session has a significant effect on the quality of life and improves the family relationships in families with mentally retarded children (p≥ 0/01). Emphasizing enhancement of parents ‘awareness, free discussion on worries and learning ways of coping with children’s preoccupations and problem solving skills are effective in improving quality of life and family relationships. All the participants emphasized suggestibility, hostility and withdrawal in their children and insisted on controlling the parents fight over accusing and blaming one another. Researchers suggest that in order to improve parent-child relationship, it would be better if both parents participate in group sessions at the same time.

The purpose of this study is to investigate personality traits and adjustment of mothers of normal and mentally retarded children in Tehran. The statistical population includes all mothers who in Tehran. The sample consists of 200 mothers (100 mothers with mentally retarded children and 100 with normal children) that were selected by convenience sampling method. For data collection, Bell’s social adjustment scale and Cattell’s 16 personality factor questionnaire are used in this study. The data are analyzed by using multivariate and univariate analysis of variance and T test. The results indicate that there is a significant difference between mothers of mentally retarded children and those of normal girls in terms of personality traits and adjustment. It means that mothers of mentally retarded children have lower adjustment level compared with mothers of normal girls. Also mothers of normal children have shown higher level of personality factors in general intelligence, emotional stability, creating a strong and stable temperament than mothers of mentally retarded children. According to the research findings, it is suggested that providing special trainings for parents can reduce stress, increase adaptability and is generally effective in improving mental health.
